I designed Mito as an independent exploration of modular housing, taking its name from mitosis, the process by which a single cell divides in two. The idea borrows this principle of division and growth for housing, proposing a home that can expand, contract or relocate as the needs of the people living in it change over time.

Available in M, L, and XL sizes, these independent modules adapt to shifting family dynamics. A household can start with a single module, integrate a second as space needs grow, and later separate them when family members move out, leaving a smaller home behind while relocating the second unit.

Gradual expansion spreads costs over time and avoids paying for unused space. Moving an existing module costs significantly less than building new, while protecting land durability, leaving only minimal site marks such as a simple concrete slab that is easy to clear upon removal.

The design proposes using CLT to form lightweight, rigid structural boxes that arrive ready for assembly. This structural rigidity allows each module to withstand seismic forces and transport stresses, while resting on minimal foundations to keep ground impact low.
