Conditions of Abandonment is an unsolicited research into the demographic and spatial crisis unfolding across Romania. Population ageing, emigration, and declining birth rates have left many communities shrinking, while public infrastructure remains oversized and increasingly underused. More than 1,000 school buildings across the country have been left empty, becoming visible signs of this wider demographic decline.
The research begins with a spatial analysis of abandoned schools across Romania, examining their distribution in relation to demographic change and population ageing. It uses the geography of these buildings to reveal where demographic decline is most concentrated and where the existing built environment no longer corresponds to the communities it was designed to serve.
Abandoned schools are not isolated buildings. Their concentration acts as an indicator of vulnerable communities, revealing places where population loss, ageing, and the erosion of social infrastructure overlap. Historically positioned at the centre of villages and neighbourhoods, schools were part of the civic structure of the community. Their abandonment therefore marks not only the loss of an educational function, but a wider weakening of social life.
The claim of this research is that abandoned schools should remain part of the public infrastructure. Their transformation should not end with complete privatisation, but should retain a public programme that responds to the needs of the communities that remain.
